Homelessness in Mumbai rarely looks like an empty street. It includes people sleeping on pavements and station platforms, families living under flyovers and on traffic islands, and residents of informal settlements built from tarpaulin, tin sheeting and salvaged material on land they don't legally hold.
All three groups share one thing during monsoon: little to no protection against sustained, heavy rain. A pavement dweller has none. A flyover offers only partial cover depending on wind direction. An informal settlement's tarp-and-tin roof can hold for weeks and then fail in a single bad storm.

Living without dry shelter through monsoon isn't just uncomfortable — it drives specific, well-documented health risks.
Feet and skin that stay damp for days become vulnerable to fungal infections such as tinea (ringworm) and athlete's foot, along with painful skin maceration and secondary bacterial infection from broken skin. Waterproof footwear that lets feet dry is one of the simplest effective preventive measures.
Wading through floodwater contaminated with animal urine (commonly from rats, a well-known urban risk during Mumbai's floods) can transmit leptospirosis, a bacterial infection that ranges from flu-like illness to severe organ complications if untreated.
